Animal Ethics Committee

Happy Bash Pty Ltd has established an independent Animal Ethics Committee (AEC). The committee is made up of experienced industry representatives with extensive backgrounds in animal care. They have the common goal of acting in an advisory and consultative capacity in relation to pet welfare and the ethical significance of the sale of pet hermit crabs. All reports and correspondence from meetings are directed to the CEO of Happy Bash Pty Ltd.

Our AEC meets twice a year to review all matters arising from customers or the community in relation to pet hermit crab welfare. These include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Changes to existing documentation relating to the pet management plan
  • Major changes to policies in relation to animal ethics standards
  • Advice to management on animal ethics matters
  • Maintaining institutional accountability
  • Considering the animal ethical implications of all proposed uses of the pet collection and sales
  • Maintaining a registry of all animal ethics matters and resolution plans
  • Maintaining communication with Happy Bash management and providing access, upon request, to information in the AEC’s records
  • Considering and reporting on any animal ethics problems that may be drawn to its attention
  • Reporting to the CEO through the chairperson
  • Conducting audits of livestock housing and facilities as required

It is important to note that under the Australian Animal Research Act of 1985, Happy Bash is not required to form an AEC for the following reasons:

  • Our organisation will not be using livestock in any shape or form for research.
  • Our business model and direction only relate to invertebrates, which are exempt from the requirement to have a committee review animal use.
  • We will not receive applications for projects and will approve only those projects that are ethically acceptable and conform to the requirements of the Code (Clause 2.3.2 [i]).

Despite this, we still have an AEC in place to ensure we achieve our pet welfare goals.

If you would like to contact the committee to review a matter in relation to the management and sale of pet hermit crabs, please direct your enquiry in writing to:

The Chairperson
Animal Ethics Committee
C/O Happy Bash Pty Ltd

The committee will review your submission at the next AEC meeting and respond accordingly.

Animal Management Plan

The Krabooz also has in place an animal management plan in relation to Krabooz pet hermit crabs. This plan is implemented within the company by all who are involved with the management and distribution of the live pets. This plan includes the following:

  • Biological and environmental detail
  • Taxonomy
  • Natural history
  • Housing requirements
  • General husbandry
  • Feeding requirements
  • Collection handling and transport
  • Health requirements
  • Behaviour and breeding

This plan is reviewed and approved by the AEC and then updated as new or relative information that is presented to the committee.

Retail and Customer Care Plan

Happy Bash Pty Ltd has put into place the following retail and customer care strategies in the hope that Krabooz pets receive the best possible care as a “first-time pet.”

Retail Training

Any new pet retailer that joins the Krabooz family goes through an initial induction, followed by a training module for the store management and staff. This information helps the stores manage the pets in a store environment but also educates them so they can pass on information to their customers. Stores are supplied with the following:

  • Habitat, with humidity control vents, heat mat, and hygrometer
  • Habitat set-up guide
  • Daily care checklist
  • In store care guide
  • Headquarters phone and email care support
  • Training module

Customer Care Plan

The Krabooz also has in place key activities to help customers know how to best care for their Krabooz, including the following:

  • A care app, including care alerts and a heat mat monitor
  • Online care information and video tutorials
  • Directions for use on all product packaging
  • 24-hour Facebook care response
  • In-school education programme

Assessing What We Do and Why

Our Purpose

We are an early learning brand. Our objective is to create a positive first-time pet experience for kids so they understand and learn the responsibilities of pet ownership.

The Krabooz creates engagement between child and pet through exciting products and character design. This strong engagement allows us to take children through the journey of pet ownership as well as the responsibilities associated with it.

Our goal is to teach children how to care for animals through a first-time pet experience so that they understand about caring for complicated pets like dogs and cats in the future.

Krabooz Enriches the Child’s Life Experience

  • Pets help build a child’s self-esteem.
  • Pets become children’s friends.
  • Children with no exposure to animals or nature in their home environment can see, feel, touch, and make a connection with the wide world of animals with their Krabooz.
  • Observing and caring for an animal instils a sense of responsibility and respect for life.
  • A pet brings increased sensitivity and awareness of the feelings and needs of others—both animals and humans.
  • Kids learn that all living things need more than just food and water for survival.
  • Kids will see how their behaviour and actions directly affect others.
